My wonderful friend, Talina, is currently doing work placement at Merrigong Theatre Company, and informed me that they were looking for volunteers for the South Coast Childrens Festival.
They needed volunteers and I needed work placement, it was a great fit.
I didn’t know what was required but I had heard amazing things about Merrigong so I emailed Jennifer O’Sullivan, who is the education and promotions manager at Merrigong. She then sent me all the information needed and some times for me to choose from, saying I should hear from Amanda Foote (Merrigong Venue Coordinator) with confirmation and updates.
In the next week I looked up, on the Merrigong Theatre and Illawarra Childrens Services (who were co-running the event) the South Coast Childrens Festival, to see past events and the information on this years one.
After that I hadn’t heard from Amanda and a week before the festival I rang Jennifer to confirm. She said it was strange that I hadn’t heard from Amanda, but everything should be fine and she would get her to contact me ASAP. That afternoon I got a call from Amanda confirming my placement and informing me of what I would be doing on the day, what to wear, what to expect and such.
I had to take the Friday and Sunday off of my normal work as I would be working the festival for those days (I would have loved to work the Saturday too but I was busy).
It was a little bit confusing at the start as I was worried that they didn’t have a place for me, as they had not contacted me further. But with a little push needed I got the placement, and they were so lovely about it.
